Referrals are usually the cheapest growth channel a rewards site has. Someone who’s already earning money on your platform has a natural reason to tell friends about it, and unlike paid ads, you only pay out when the referral actually results in an active member. Setting it up correctly takes a bit more thought than just handing out a link, though.
Give every member a trackable link
The foundation is a unique referral code or link tied to each member’s account, something like yoursite.com/?ref=48213. When someone new signs up through that link, the system stores who referred them, usually as a cookie on first visit combined with a database record at registration so the attribution survives even if the new user doesn’t sign up immediately.
Decide what triggers a reward
This is the part operators get wrong most often. If you reward a referral the moment someone signs up, you’ll get flooded with fake accounts created just to farm the bonus. A better structure ties the reward to actual activity: the referred member has to complete their first offer, or reach a minimum earned balance, before the referrer sees anything. This filters out signups that were never going to generate real activity anyway.
Pick a reward structure
There are two common approaches, and plenty of sites combine them. A flat bonus pays the referrer a fixed amount once the referred member hits the activity threshold above. A percentage model pays the referrer an ongoing cut of whatever the referred member earns, sometimes for a limited window and sometimes indefinitely. Percentage models tend to build stronger long-term incentive for active members to keep inviting people, since their referral earnings compound over time rather than paying out once.
Watch for self-referral
Some members will try to refer themselves using a second account or a family member’s device to claim both the referrer and referred bonus. Basic protection includes checking for shared IP addresses or device fingerprints between a referrer and their referrals, and holding referral bonuses in a pending state for the same window you’d use for regular offer completions. It won’t catch everything, but it removes the easiest version of the abuse.
Make the link easy to share
A referral link buried three menus deep in account settings won’t get used. Put it somewhere visible on the dashboard, with a one-click copy button and, ideally, pre-written share text for social platforms or messaging apps. The less friction between a member deciding to share and actually sharing, the more referrals you’ll get from the same active user base.
Pocket GPT & Rewards Script ships with referral tracking, configurable reward structures, and pending-balance protection already built in, so this whole system is a settings panel rather than something you have to build and test yourself.
